Sustainable Weight Lifting Clothes From bodytek
When it comes to weight lifting clothing, there are certain requirements that you just can't get away from. The bodytek range caters for these requirements perfectly, as we'll outline in this blog post.
Of course underpinning the entire bodytek philosophy is the eco-friendly and sustainable nature of the clothing we produce. A fantastic by-product of our sustainable fabrics just happens to be that they are perfect for weight lifting clothing, thanks to their hard wearing nature and the flexibility and freedom of movement which they afford to the wearer.
Why Bamboo Fabric is Perfect for Weight Lifters
In the gym world, weight lifting is quite a unique activity. There is no other style of lifting where the lifter and the barbell have quite so much contact. Good weightlifting technique means the bar will be in contact with the lifter on every rep, so the clothing the weight lifter wears needs to be pretty robust.
Take a look at the video below to see what I mean. Oh and yes, that is a bodytek t-shirt that's being worn...
The bar is in contact with the hips in the first lift (the clean) and then rests on the chest and shoulders before the second part of the lift (the jerk).
Bamboo Fabric is Hard Wearing
Why is that a benefit to a weight lifter?
A barbell has a rough textured surface called knurling, which is designed to allow the lifter to maintain good grip at heavy weight. The problem though is that the knurling can damage low quality materials, so weight lifters regularly wear out their t-shirts as the constant contact with the bar wears holes in the fabric.
That doesn't happen with bodytek clothing, because of the hard wearing nature of bamboo. It's more than capable of standing up to the contact with the barbell, no matter how many reps you do!
Bamboo Fabric is Flexible
In weight lifting, the body has to move quickly and significantly more than other types of lift.
Think of the movement your body goes through on a weight machine - barely any, really. Typically you're lifting with one two limbs at a time and even then it's only in one range of motion. Weight lifting is quite the opposite - take a look at this video below...
As you can see from both of the videos, with weight lifting you're lifting a heavy weight at very high speed, using your whole body to do so. From your feet all the way up to your hands extended overhead, it's a full body movement that means you have to have freedom of movement and flexibility in your clothing. Any kind of restriction through your clothes can lead to poor technique and potential injury, which of course isn't ideal.
Cotton isn't always flexible, whereas the bamboo fabric is soft, flexible and extremely strong, making it an ideal material for weight lifting clothing.
Bamboo Fabric is Anti-Microbial
When done properly, weight lifting is a pretty sweaty sport! It's hard work, takes a lot of effort and uses a lot of muscle per session.
With many garments, especially those made from materials such as polyester, nylon and cheap cottons, they begin to smell very quickly. The sweat molecules are caught in the fabric and trapped, whereby bacteria starts to act on them and the clothes smell.
After a few wears, this smell can become permanent in the fabric, so it doesn't matter what you do to wash them, it never goes away. With bamboo fabric, independent tests show that the collection of sweat molecules and bacteria in the material is significantly lower than others, meaning the fabric takes longer to start to smell, but also washing is significantly more effective, even at low temperatures.
Long story short, bamboo fabric will take far longer to start to smell than other fabrics.
Bamboo Fabric is Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
In spite of its other benefits, the bodytek ethos is to produce sustainable and eco-friendly sportswear. We're just lucky that bamboo fabric happens to be perfect for almost all exercise purposes.
